You can find a 1996 Chevrolet 350 cubic inch motor diagram at most Chevrolet dealerships. Most auto-parts stores will also have the motor diagram.
The diagram should be on a label on the deck or on the rear of the mower. If it is gone, then your local mower repair shop can probably print you one out for a small fee.
One of the idler pulleys toward the top of the belt routing is "spring loaded", meaning that the arm holding the pulley is under constant, and (relatively) even tension against the belt. There is usually a square hole in the arm and if you look closely, it typically matches the size of your 1/2 inch drive "breaker bar". That's handy for releasing the tension when you want to take off the old belt. Study the routing of the old belt since the new one will need to go back in the same place. There MAY be a belt routing diagram somewhere under the hood, but since there are a couple different possibilities, if your diagram is missing you'll need to find a routing diagram from the dealer.
A 1997 Chevrolet 454 cubic inch engine diagram can be found at most Chevrolet dealerships. The engine diagram can be obtained from most auto-parts stores.
Try Advantage Auto Parts for your mower belt needs. I just did and I'm delighted ! Last year I bought a minimum quality (blue) belt from a local garage at a cost of about $25 bucks and thought I was at least content with price and quality. However, NOT when the belt lasted less than a year with really very little use. Today, I got a best quality belt (brown) from Advantage (76 inch) for only $12.99 ! NOW, I'm DELIGHTED ! Give Advantage a try. It's best to take your old belt for match-up, but at least know the width and length of the belt you need.
Use a 3/4 inch pull bar or wrachet tool and take the pressure off the belt tensioner. Then just remove the belt and there should also be a diagram of how to do this on the inside of your engine compartment along the top of the grill somewhere.
For the most part it's an easy task: find your belt tensioner(look for the square slotted pulley, a half inch drive ratchet), once you've got the belt off(make sure you remember the placement of the belt or draw a diagram) their is 3-4 bolts remove these and the wires attached and your homefree. Goodluck with the project!
