When you find out let me know. My 2003 5.4 Expedition is doing it also. samfortenberry@cableone.net I have had the coils, wires, and plugs checks. The check engine light will come on, but it never stores a code for the machine to read??? I had the same problem with my 98 5.4L Expedition. Codes indicated bad 02 sensors. However, thanks to honest mechanic, vacuum hose leak was the culprit. Once 12 dollar hose was replaced, no more sputtering or hesitating. Worth a try.
You'll probably have to drill new holes. Unless you can manage to find an aftermarket spoiler that is a direct fit.
The 8 spark plugs are located under the 8 individual coils firewall 4 - 8 3 - 7 2 - 6 1 - 5 front

on my 2003 expedition the code is located behind the access panel on the passenger side floor board where the fuse box is it is a 5 digit number.
you have to remove the back driver trim in the back of the jeep..........you will find a green plug, the aftermarket wiring will plug into that.......................good luck
