Serial number will help identify the year made if it is a Browning. You can also do your own investigation by looking at other models being sold that are in the same condition as yours. The serial number is located by the bottom of the barrel right in front of the trigger guard. Also, since these guns are considered "throw aways" for criminals, high point also puts in a hidden serial number. I have not been able to locate it however.

Most F&Ws that HAD a serial number had it stamped on the butt- and stamped on the rear of the cylinder. LEGALLY, the one on the butt is the serial number. Many older guns did not have serial numbers, especially lower cost guns.
