You won't. Your Wide Awake is a "Hardware Store" gun- made by W.H. Davenport for sale by several private hardware stores. W. H. Davenport Arms Company was in business at various places and times from 1880 to 1910, Until 1968, rifles and shotguns were not required by law to have serial numbers, and low cost guns usually do not have one. Yes, it is perfectly legal to own such a gun- it IS highly illegal to REMOVE or deface a serial number- but a gun made before 1968 that has never had a serial number is legal. PS- many shotguns from that era are "Damascus" or "twist steel" barreled, and should not be fired with modern ammo. Have yours checked by a competent gunsmith.
No.... If the bolt hasn't been replaced, the serial number will be on the bolt. You can also find one on the barrel under the fore grip if it isn't apparent on the barrel where it mates to the receiver, and on the receiver its self. Remember that all weapons are required to have the serial number stamped on all removable parts (major parts)
I have a J Stevens Springfield Model 15, .22 single shot, and there is no serial number. I bought it a t a gun store, and the dealer marked my receipt to indicate it had no serial number. There is also no indication that a serial number was removed.
