I don't know if this is a red headed salamander, but I was walking by the riverbank (Covington, Louisiana) about ten minutes ago and saw this "critter." It was about 8-9 inches long, had a reddish head that was very large in proportion to its stumpy body. The head was triangular-shaped, just like a poisonous snake. It may have had a longer tail that had been cut. It was slimy looking, and had legs. It ran very fast in a wiggly motion like a snake. I did take a picture, but it is not very good.
The red headed woodpecker is not found in California.
No its a Northern Red Salamander.

some are dangerous some are not the red salamander is an example of an poisonous salamander
It really depends on where you live (assuming that you found it somewhere). Where I live (Northern California), that would probably be an alligator lizard. They are fairly common. Also, it could be a salamander but salamanders are amphibians, not lizards.
yes it does it is comonley found in warm areas
Possibly because they are very commonplace in Alabama
