Contacting Colt and getting a letter would be a good start.
It would tell the year when it was produced.
A letter from Colt will get you started.
Go to the library and look for Flayderman's Antique American Firearms. You should be able to identify your pistol from the pictures and descriptions in the Stevens chapter.

Colt did just about anything that was reasonable. You will need to get a historical letter to find out if your pistol left the factory in the condition it is currently in. Go to Colt's website to find out cost and procedures.
not much info, but if a cap and ball revolver then made about 1847. if cartridge model then need more detail info
You could get a historical letter from Colt. Cost is about 100 USD or so.
is it a 25 cal ??? is it a 32 cal ???? is it a 380 caliber ???? that info might help....
Call Colt and they should be able to give you some basic info on the serial numbers and such but any additional info will cost about $75
