You have to activate an accouont with Sprint. In the normal course of things, this requires a credit check, sometimes a credit card, but in all cases, an "activation account" with Sprint, wherein you agree to "stay" with with Sprint for (whatever) period of time --- with a cancellation penaly due --- usually around $200, if you cancel prior to your contract expiration date.
IF yu go to Wirefly.com, you can get a "free Nextel/Sprint" phone which will be shipped to you, with a number up and running, with no credit check.

∙ 10y agoThe only place to activate a Sprint service phone online is through the Sprint website. They offer a support team that can help you if you have problems doing it yourself. They are very friendly and can easily assist you the majority of the time.
