Fire sprinkler systems are effectively already zoned - you don't need to do anything special. When your fire sprinkler system detects a fire, it doesn't set off all the sprinkler heads at once. Instead, each fire sprinkler head goes off when the temperature underneath it reaches a specific temperature, meaning only the ones affected by the fire will go off.
With the high summer temperatures this year, many people are interested in having automatic sprinklers for their yards. Most homeowners choose to have automatic sprinkler systems installed for them, while if you are handy you can do it yourself. One option is to turn to Rain Bird, one of the leaders in automatic sprinkler installation. You can go direct to their site, fill out some simple forms and their designers will contact you to find the best automatic sprinkler for your landscape. They will also help you with referrals with local contractors in your area.
A water gong is typically arranged to alarm the instant water in the sprinkler system begins flowing, certainly within a few seconds, as the pressure drops on the sprinkler side, allowing water pressure to turn the clapper in the gong.
Standard wet-pipe fire extinguishers (the kind that you'll find in most buildings) have 2 components: the fire pump and the pipe system. Within the pipes there is pressurized water, held in place by the sprinkler heads. This water is supplied to the pipes by the fire pump.If you look carefully at a fire sprinkler head, you'll notice what appear to be glass bulbs filled with a colored liquid. The liquid in these bulbs is extremely heat sensitive, and the heat from a fire in the building will cause it to expand and burst the bulb. This releases the pressurized water from the pipes into the room with the fire. Another type of sprinkler valve uses a "fusible link" that is calibrated to melt and open the valve when it is hot enough. The release of water by the sprinkler head causes a drop of water pressure in the fire sprinkler system, which sends a signal to the fire pump that it needs to kick on and supply more water pressure to the sprinklers so they can continue to put out the fire. Once the fire is extinguished, the only way to turn the sprinklers off is to shut them off at the pump. This is usually only done with permission of the fire department. Some fire sprinklers work by turning on the whole system at the signal of smoke or fire and dousing the entire area with water.Fire sprinklers are often found in public buildings. They are connected to smoke detectors, so when the detectors go off, the fire sprinklers do as well.Standard wet-pipe fire extinguishers (the kind that you'll find in most buildings) have 2 components: the fire pump and the pipe system. High water pressure from the street or well, but there's an exception: City water pressure (from the street) may need to have the pressure reduced to the home. Some homes have pressure regulators for this purpose, some do not. The same goes for well systems that use a pressure pump (an often a pressure tank); the outlet pressure is set so that the pressure to the home doesn't go too high or too low. An exception for homes with fire sprinkler systems. There is a check valve from the main water supply that feeds the fire sprinkler system. As temperatures drop at night, the water in the fire sprinkler pipes contracts slightly and additional water from the main water line goes into the fire sprinkler system. During the day, the water in the fire sprinkler pipes heats up and expands slightly, but has no where to go because of the check valve. This action can cause a very high pressure in the fire sprinkler pipes if there isn't also a pressure relief valve in the system. Numerous older homes do not have a pressure relief valve for the fire sprinkler system and risk having a pipe or joint burst. The bottom line: if you suspect that you have high water pressure in the home, consult a local plumber or building contractor for the appropriate solution.

There seems to be a new fire sprinkler mandate since 2011. Well I'm not sure about the water conservation. I think that could be up to the person. Reduce the amount of time the sprinklers go of or don't use them id they aren't needed.
The most common fire sprinkler system is a wet pipe system wich always has water in it. The sprinkler heads have a heat sensitive element, most commonly a glass bulb filled with liquid that expand when exposed to heat, after a certain temperature is met , usually 160 degrees or more the glass bulb breaks and allows water to flow on the fire in a uniform water density. The sprinkler system may have an alarm device that sounds an audible alarm in the building, and/or call the fire department. The system may have a connection for the fire department to add to the automatic water supply. there are other types of systems, dry-pipe, preaction, and others which are similar but do not have water in the piping initally due to concerns of freezing water in the system, or sensitive areas where accidental water damage would be a greater problem than fire.(museums, computer rooms, etc)
plumbing school teaches you about pipe-laying , where when and how to lay a pipe, how to fix it. The American Fire Sprinkler Association deals with such kind of training for information you can go for Wikipedia
