It means to make one angry. It has been said that it comes from horse racing. Racing horses are high strung and skittish. They often have a goat as a companion to relax them. It is said that if the goat was stolen, the horse would do poorly in the race. "We got your goat!" But this is not been proven to be true. It seems to come from American slang about 1904.
The horses owner typically thinks of a name and submits it to the racing secretary for approval. Rules vary from breed to breed, but thoroughbreds are the most popular race horses and they have certain limits and rules on names. If the racing secretary denies the name the owner must submit another one for approval.
Opinion 1:There is no reason why horse racing SHOULD NOT be banned. But there are many reasons why it SHOULD be banned. Here are some: cruelty to animals;against animal rights;entertainment for people at the horse's expense;horse is in pain;horses have to die;horses are being whipped;horses are sad;horses are being abused;horses can not speak for themselves; andhorses are unhappyOpinion 2:It shouldn't be banned altogether, but definitely limitations need to be put on. There are whipping laws (well at least there are here in Australia), but they should be implemented throughout the world. Steeplechase and suicidal things like that should definitely be banned, but flat racing has nowhere near as many risks as jumps. As to the horses being abused and unhappy, how do you know? Just look at So You Think (one of Australia's best horses) in the winners circle. He's enjoying himself. And most horses, definitely thoroughbreds love galloping. Opinion 3:Horse racing should NOT be banned. Regulations as to the number of horses vs. the width of the track or something like that should be put on, and certainly whip laws should be made though. Opinion 4:If horse racing were banned there would be little incentive for anybody to breed horses. Sure, some horses would still be kept as livestock but the thoroughbred bloodline would predictably decline in the absence of race-proven sires and dams. Domestic animals need to serve a function or there is little point in raising them. If nobody raises them, there is no future for their progeny. Banning racing would have the unintended consequence of reducing the population of horses and would ultimately lead to the extinction of racing breeds. Arguing that horse racing should be banned because it makes horses unhappy and is against 'animal rights' presumes a level of anthropomorphism that most humans will not accept. A ban on horse racing would never be accepted because the industry provides employment to so many people and revenue to local economies and taxes to government.
