Angel Jibraeel comes to him in cave of hira where he is meditating and tells him to read but he can't read so the angel asks again and once more he replies the same answer and then the angel asks again and then the Angel put the Holy Quran on his chest 3 times and said read. The first surah that was revealed was Surah 'Alaq. Initially first five verses were revealed followed by a hiatus. These verses were revealed in cave of Hira. Angel Jibraeel (Gabriel) came to Prophet in form of human said, "Iqra" meaning "read". Prophet said, "I can't read." Angel Gabriel said again, "Iqra.". Prophet replied the same. After three attempts, Gabriel squeezed Prophet and recited the first five verses.
The Angel Gibreel came down on one night and asked the Prophet to read. The Prophet p.b.u.h. said I don't know. He said it again. And the Prophet p.b.u.h. said I don't know what. The Angel said it a 3d time and the Prophet repeated the same thing. Finally Angel Gibreel said Read by the name of your God. So the Prophet p.b.u.h. read the first ayat of Sura number 96-Al Alaq.
