There are several firms that will certify coins, old or modern. Most coin dealers are members of ANA or PCGS and can submit coins for you. There are other, less widely recognized, firms that will accept coins directly from collectors. But be warned, there are some pretty high fees for these services, so most collectors will only submit high-dollar items that are more likely to be faked or altered.
Weather you would like to verify the age or what type of a rug it is then the best way would be to simply send some images of the rug to a reputable antique rug dealer. Make sure that you include a picture of the back of the rug as the weave will help the dealer to identify where the rug was made.
Authentication of a stamp is called 'EXPERTIZING'. 'Expertizing is used on stamps that are normally a $100 plus. Preferably in the $1,000's and they can be costly and take some time (up to months). There are 3 stamp expertizing organizations in the US and they are:
William Weiss Expertizing does a quick on-line identification service for $5 and a more advanced expertizing service with certificate for $20. I would use him first for a basic identification. I just recently used his service for a $15,000 stamp and he was quick and reasonably priced.

The surest way to authenticate a coin is by submitting it to an authentication and grading service. They will authenticate your coin, assign a condition grade to it, then encapsulate it in a sealed container. Other that that you can do this yourself by comparing the coins features with a similar coin that is established as authentic. Coin authentication has become important since the coin collecting community has been flooded with high quality fakes from China. The quality of the fakes is so good that the only way to be sure of the authenticity is to have the coin professionally authenticated. The presence of these fakes also makes it necessary to know who you are buying from, on-line auctions or mail order are very risky and offer no fraud protection, I would recommend avoiding them.
When you authenticate something you verify that it is genuine. For example, with certain kinds of memorabilia you can have it looked at by a professional.
