I started out looking in all kinds of devious directions, including for example

the individual who put my synagogue in contact with the individual in Israel

who eventually wrote us a Torah. Suddenly, it dawned on me: This is goofy!

All you need to do is contact any 'sofer stam'. They deal in production and

repair of everything from mezuzos and tefilin to megillos and sifrei Torah.

Any sofer stam will have a reliable and continuous source of klaf.

There are countless sofrim, in every city with any substantial Jewish community.

A web search for "sofer stam" will certainly get you started in the right direction.

Farther down on this page, in the "Related Links", I've provided a link to one

in New York City that looks, from its website and its location, like it's a major

operation. I have no connection with them. They just happened to be near

the beginning of the list I got when I did a web search. Contact them, or

generate your own contacts, and I'm willing to bet that your search for kosher

skin is as good as over.

What Parchment hebrews wrote their laws on?

There are three types of specially processed animal skin or parchment: gevil, Klaf, and duchsustos. These are Hebrew words to describe different types of parchment, although the term duchsustos is Greek. These are used for the production of a mezuzah, megillah, tefillin, and/or a Sefer Torah ("Torah scroll"). A kosher Sefer Torah should be written on gevil. If klaf is used in place of gevil, the Sefer Torah is still kosher, but this should not be done at the outset (bedieved). A Sefer Torah written on duchsustos is not kosher. After preparation, the scribe must mark out the parchment using the sargel ("ruler") ensuring the guidelines are straight. Only the top guide is done and the letters suspended from it. The use of gevil and certain types of parchment has allowed some sifrei Torah of antiquity to survive intact for over 800 years.

What is the Torah scroll made of?

The Torah is made with parchment of kosher animal skins. The Torah-scroll must be written by a specially trained pious and knowledgeable scribe called a sofer. The scroll is written on parchment by hand, in Hebrew calligraphy with precise shapes for the letters. This takes about six months to a year. The ink is prepared in a traditional manner; and inexactly-written letters must be rewritten before the scroll may be read from.

Why is a Torah scroll kept in a case?

Here's some basic facts about the Sefer Torah, the name given to the Torah as used in synagogues:It must be hand-written and must be absolutely free of mistakes. To achieve this, each of the 304,805 letters is painstakingly written by a highly-trained scribe known as a sofer - this process can take as long as 18 months to complete.Soferim - the plural of sofer - must complete a gruelling course of study before they achieve the skill necessary. Naturally, after all this training and due to the amount of hard work and concentration required, they don't work for peanuts.A Sefer Torah cannot be written on paper - instead, it must be written on klaf or gevil, parchment made from the specially-treated hide of a goat, a cow or a deer. This too is a highly skilled process. The Torah is believed by observant Jews to be the word of G-d, either given to Moses by G-d or dictated by Him.With all these facts in mind, you can see that not only do Jews consider the Torah itself to be of very, very special importance and also that a Sefer Torah is an extremely expensive item - most are purchased by an entire community pooling their resources. That's why it is kept in a protective case, which is itself kept in a protective ark. Thanks to this care, respect and protection, some synagogues have Sefer Torahs more than 800 years old that are still used every week.

What is nomadic hunting?

a nomadic family is a family that travels the world for long time and make it a way of living. There are few families like that such as the Klaf Family from Israel. http://www.thenomadicfamily.comA modern nomadic family is a family who decides to make up their own rules in the game of life. A modern nomadic family has the courage (some say "insanity") to leave all they know, and explore the unknown. Nomadic families life out their dreams. A nomadic family has the blessed time for real family bonding, self-reflection, exploration, and whatever it is that is most dear to them. Most nomadic families either work as they travel, sell everything they own and "retire" early, or just happen to be lucky enough to have the dough. Nomadic families may travel by boat, RV, on foot, on bike, or any other creative combination imaginable. The Klaf did not sell their belongings. They have a home and car waiting for them in Israel whenever they decide that they've been nomadic for long enough.Like every other nomadic family, they have their own very personal vision of how they want nomadic family to taste like. In addition to exploring and breathing in new worlds; they settle down in this and that small village for about two months at a time. They "work" in whatever they can; and get whatever others can give them in exchange: free room and board, food, a taste of life with the locals, friendship. In the rural La Lucha de la Tigra, Costa Rica, they taught in the local school; The local school let their kids attend for free, and fed they Klaf family a hot lunch daily. Gabi, the wife, taught a"Clean Your Soul" class to the locals; in return, the local brought fruits and veggies from their lands as gratitude. For us, being a nomadic family is all about no longer living the hectic, modern daily lives they were used to. It's about slowing down and investing in what is most precious to the family: regaining their health, educating their kids (and themselves) in things they never had the time for, seeing the world and meeting its lovely citizens, volunteering, and figuring out how to share their expertise as a form of continual income online. Also, they are people who live in Mongolian countryside breeding so called "five star animals", which are sheep, goat, cow, horse and camel.

How do Jews use the mezuzah?

A Mezuzah is placed on the doorpost of the home within the first 30 days of living there. Once it is in place, there is nothing that needs to be done other than have it checked once every few years. Some do have the custom to touch or "kiss" the Mezuzah each time they pass to show respect.
