The oldest and most traditional posture of prayer for Christians is called the orans position (literally means the prayer position). This is a position of standing with arms raised to either side, in imitation of Christ on the cross. The oldest images from the Roman catacombs and houses of Christians in prayer show us Christians in this position. In the medieval period, prayer was often done with arms crossed infront of yourself. The preztel was in fact designed in imitation of Christians in prayer like this, since it was a food meant for the Lenten fast before Easter. In the modern era, it has become common place to associate kneeling with prayer, a posture traditionally reserved for penitence. Often, the postures come from imitation of Christ - like the orans position. Or from practical need. In fact, Christians are encouraged to pray without ceasing, so really any posture can be a posture of prayer.
