A bobbin is a device which holds the thread that is below the needle in a sewing machine. The shuttle is a (usually) removable housing the bobbin is inserted into. The design of shuttles (and bobbins) has changed over the years, so there are many styles of shuttles. Visit the links below for some pictures of shuttles.

A shuttle is used to place the weft or crosswise threads while weaving on a loom. There are several styles of shuttles. Inside a boat shuttle is a bobbin that holds the weft thread. An end-feed shuttle has a bobbin inside that is called a pirn. A bobbin winder is used to load the thread on the bobbins. A ski shuttle is used for coarser weft and has a flat base that looks much like a ski - the ends are curved upward slightly and allows it to slide quickly through the opened shed in the warp threads. Ski shuttles and stick shuttles are wound by hand. A stick shuttle is a flat piece of wood of varying lengths with carved ends to keep the weft wrapped until it is unwind during the weaving process. Some stick shuttles have sharp edges to help beat the weft in place as when using a inkle loom.

Singer Corporation first sewing machine was made on 1846. The machine was called Bobbin driver or Transverse shuttle invented by Elias Howe.
Depends on the machine brand. To determine which way to load the bobbin into the bobbin case you need to determine which way the slot is facing that the tread slides into prior to it slipping under the tension clip. Hold the bobbin case with the opening away from you with the slot facing up. If the slot on the bobbin case is facing to the left put the bobbin into the case with the thread spinning the bobbin counter clockwise. If the slot on the bobbin case faces to the right put the bobbin into the case with the thread spinning the bobbin clockwise.
All the Emdeko machines I have seen are 15 Class oscillating shuttle models and use the 15 Class bobbins.

The singer 6212c takes a class 66 bobbin. I have one of these machines myself, it's from the '80's and takes the same bobbin as my 1913 66 red-eye treadle. Enjoy, these are some of the easies to find bobbins.
Betsy Bobbin was created in 1913.
to keep the bobbin in place
It relates to the orientation of the hook (the part under the bed that catches the top thread to create the lock stitch) to the needle. Horizontal machines often have a 'fixed' bobbin case that the user doesn't remove, and utilize a drop-in type of bobbin, whereas vertical machines have removable bobbin cases that the user must insert the bobbin into, then insert the filled bobbin case into the machine. Horizontal bobbins usually hold a lot more thread and make it easier to replace the bobbin without having to remove the work, therefore you will commonly find this type in industrial applications.
