The earliest film that could be called a slasher, Thirteen Women (1932). Even though Psycho (1960) is called "The mother of all slasher films", Peeping Tom (1960) was released 3 months before.

A slasher movie is a horror movie which usually involves a psychopath stalking or hunting victims and killing them in various violent ways with weapons such as knives and axes. Popular films fitting this genre include the "Friday the 13th" series of films, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Halloween". In 1984 "A Nightmare on Elm St" gave slasher films a supernatural twist by introducing us to Freddy Krueger.
