If you are looking to live alone, you should try to rent someone's place who owns it. They might not want to go through the trouble of a credit check. You could also just rent a room in a house or apartment, they probably won't do a check. Last resort is be up front with the landlord regarding your credit. That way it's not such a shock. Worse that can happen is that you will have to pay a higher deposit, which if you take care of the place, you'll get most of it back when you leave.
