Disconnect the hoses to the heater core. Remove the lower instrument panel sound insulator, it is just below the glove box and remove the clips. Remove the heater duct, clips and screws hold it in place, then remove the heater core cover clips. Take off the heater core mounting bolts.

Is there any difference in replacing the heater core in the 2002 as opposed to an earlier model such as the 1997 ?...or is it pretty much the same job ?
The heater core is leaking. Replacing the heater core is your best bet.

No there is no freon in the heater core just antifreeze. The heater core is nothing more than a tiny radiator.
Actually, replacing the core is easy it simply slips in to where the old one was. The tricky part is you have to disassemble the entire dashboard to get to the core. If you one to two days to spend figuring out how to do that then replacing the core is easy. Here is a youtube video showing the process:
