I'm not sure of the age of this gun, or where it originally sold from, as it was given to me by an aquantance. However,it is similar in construction to most Mossberg shotguns I've seen, it has what I believe was at one time called a polychoke, which is adjustable from improved cylinder, modified, and full choke. HYTRAM It's a Mossberg 385K wearing a suit from Montgomery Ward.

western field is/was a mossberg company
25 years old The Western Field Model 865 is a private-branded Mossberg Model 402 which was sold by Montgomery Wards from 1968-1969. The Western Field 865A, which featured a slightly larger forearm, was sold from 1970-1971. The Western Field guns do not have the checkered stocks of the Mossberg 402 'Palomino' and obviously not the Mossberg logo buttplate. It has the 20" barrel of the 402 Carbine (the Model 400 had a 24" barrel) and the tubular magazine will hold 15 .22LR cartridges. sales@countrygunsmith.net
The Western Field Model 60 is the Stevens/Savage 620A. If your 'smith can't find new or good used wood for it, try Numrich Gunparts. If he was going to start with a blank stock, $400 sounds cheap, but this gun isn't that old, so factory stocks should be available.
