You could look for nice beryl crystals, as well as amethyst and smoky quartz, at the Amos Cunningham Farm, between Antreville and Due West. This is a fee site. Or go to the Durham coal mine for fern fossils, or to Castle Hayne NC for for fossil shark teeth, or Spruce Pines NC for emeralds, quartz crystals, and other goodies. Lots of neat stuff in your area.
I would strongly recommend joining the local club; this is the very best way to find out about what you can find in your area. Don't be shy, rockhounds are the best folks on earth.
