One of the worst tornadoes in U.S. history hit Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. The tornado was rated EF5, and destroyed 30% of the city. 158 people were killed, over 1100 were injured, and nearly 7,000 homes were destroyed. Damage totals were $2.8 billion, making this the costliest and 7th deadliest tornado in U.S. history.

Another major tornado struck the Oklahoma City area on May 3, 1999. This F5 tornado destroyed significant parts of the suburbs of Moore, and Bridgecreek, killing 36, injuring 583, and causing $1 billion in damage. At the time it was the costliest tornado in U.S. history and the deadliest since 1979. A mobile doppler radar that was present at the time measure winds in this tornado at 302 mph, the fastest ever recorded on earth.

The worst tornado in U.S. history was the Tri-State tornado of March 18, 1925. This F5 tornado tore a damage path 219 miles long, the longest ever recorded, across parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, killing 695 people. Several towns were mostly or completely destroyed including Annapolis, Missouri; Gorham and Parrish, Illinois; and Griffin, Indiana. In Murphysboro, Illinois alone there were 234 deaths, the highest death toll for a single town struck by a tornado. This tornado also holds the record as the longest lasting (3 hours 29 minutes) and fastest moving (73 mph) tornado on record.
