He went home to his house in Indianapolis, He resumed his law practice, did some scholarly writing and spent a few weeks at Stanford in California as a lecturer in constitutional law. He resisted pressure to run for President again in 1896 but campaigned successfully for McKinley . He died March 13, 1901.
