Carl Linnaeus is the man responsible for our organism classification system. He attended Lund, Uppsala, and the University of Harderwijk.
In 1727, at the age of 20, Linnaeus first entered the University of Lund to study medicine, but only stayed one year. He transferred to Uppsala University, which was a more prestigious university, but found that it did not have adequate facilities for medical education, so he studied botany. This was logical, since botany was part of every physician's education, anyway. He became engrossed in botany and began making botanical expeditions.
In 1735, he went to the Netherlands and attended the University of Harderwijk, where he finished his medical degree. He then continued his botanical studies at the University of Leiden.
In 1739, he returned to Sweden, where he practiced medicine until he was awarded a professorship at the University of Uppsala.
