Because of this persecution, the Christians were forced to meet in the catacombs, which were long, dark galleries under the city of Rome. There they continued their meetings, baptisms, and even burials for their dead. As a result of the persecution, many of the early Christians were scattered throughout the Roman Empire, expediting the cause of evangelism and fulfilling the Lord's commands to make disciples of all nations (Acts 8:1, 4-40, 11:19-26, Matthew 28:18-20).

AnswerThe early Christians seem to have followed local practice in the burial of their dead. It is generally accepted that first century Christians in Egypt and the Near East placed their dead in ossuaries.

By the middle of the third century, Christians began to appropriate the catacombs from the followers of Mithraism. They then used these catacombs as Christian burial places, some say as a sign of disrespect for the god Mithras.

It was the very secretiveness of the Christian sect that aroused the suspicious of the Romans - meeting privately instead of in the temples, reputed to have ceremonies eating human flesh and drinking human blood, and they were mostly Greeks, who were notoriously revolutionary plotters. The Jews, of which early Christians were a sect, expelled them in the early 90s CE, so they were under suspicion from all sides. Domitian decided to eliminate this apparent threat and began strong action. This continued until Trajan realised they were not a threat and ended official persecution.

The early Christians believed in the Resurrection of the Body and a Last Judgement. Since the burial custom at the time of the early Christians was cremation, the Christians' belief was that if the body were destroyed it could not be resurrected in its perfect state at the Last Judgement.

How did early Christian church survive?

Before Christianity became a legal religion in Roman Empire, Christians sometimes were required to hide. They would meet secretly and avoid detection as much as possible.

Where did Jewish persecution originate from?

from the ritual, (Christian) antisemitism started when Christianity was merely a branch of Judaism and the Christians did not like all of the ritual and ceremony involved in Judaism. Though there was a lull in the second and third centuries, the persecution has gone on since. Naza antisemitsm is arguably the natural progression of Christian antisemitsm, though the Roman Catholic Church would argue against it (they would also argue that Christian anitsemitsm does not exist). i hope that answers your question.

Who are persecuted Christians?

A:It is part of Christian lore that Christians are persecuted and always have been, with numerous martyrs put to death during early Roman times, but this is far from the truth.Any Christians in North Korea could expect to be persecuted by this oppressive Communist regime, but the risks for Buddhists would be far greater. Some persecution of Christians occurs occasionally in Muslim-majority countries of the Middle East, but the official position of Islam is that Christians, as people of the Book, should be free to worship as they please.Certainly, there was occasional and local, unofficial persecution of the early Christians of the Roman Empire, but it is estimated that widespread official persecution of Christian totalled no more than about twelve years, over the course of approximately three centuries. Origen, who, from his experience as well as reading, was intimately acquainted with the history of the Christians, declared that the number of martyrs was not great. Edward Gibbon (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire), in explaining the tradition of early Roman persecution, says the ecclesiastical writers of the fourth or fifth centuries ascribed to the magistrates of Rome the same degree of implacable and unrelenting zeal which filled their own breasts against the heretics or the idolaters of their own times. Christians of this period needed to justify their own actions in persecuting others, by claiming that persecution of Christians had been far more common in the past.

Who ended the persecution of the Christians by Galerius?

A:It was Galerius himself who ended the Great Persecution that he had earlier persuaded Diocletian to institute. He had come to realise that persecution would achieve nothing in turning followers away from Christianity.
