Christopher Columbus was an Italian who was "sponsored" by the queen/king of Spain to set out on a voyage to find the Northwest Passage, a route that was believed to take you to the coast of Asia without dialing around Africa. He set out on this voyage with three ships, known today as the Niña, P…inta, and the Santa Maria. These ships departed on August, 3 1492 and made landfall at San Salvador on October 12. From there his voyage continued to explore the coast of Cuba, Hispanola, and current day Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where the Santa Maria ran aground on Christmas day, and was forced to be abandoned. Columbus then left some men in a settlement they built, La Navidad, and sailed for Spain. There was a strong storm along the way and the caravan ended up landing in Portugal, Castillian Spain bitter enemy, but they were spared, and after spending a week in Portugal they returned "home" to Spain. Answer Columbus was to be made "Admiral of the Seas" and would receive a portion of all profits. The terms were unusually generous. More Information (Credit goes to "Christopher Columbus" related link) According to the contract that Columbus made with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, if C…olumbus discovered any new islands or mainland, he would receive many high rewards. In terms of power, he would be given the rank of Admiral of the Ocean Sea and appointed Viceroy and Governor of all the new lands. He had the right to nominate three persons, from whom the sovereigns would choose one, for any office in the new lands. He would be entitled to 10% of all the revenues from the new lands in perpetuity; this part was denied to him in the contract, although it was one of his demands. Additionally, he would also have the option of buying one-eighth interest in any commercial venture with the new lands and receive one-eighth of the profits. ( Full Answer )

Columbus set on his famous voyage of discovery with three ships, the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina. All of them started the voyage, otherwise we would not think of them as his ships. Not all of them got back to Spain, however.

Christopher Columbus expected to find a western route to "the Indies" meaning China, Japan, and other places in south and southeast Asia.
For the same reason that most people do most things; to make a profit, get some money, accomplish something spectacular. In this case, Columbus had figured that instead of sailing south around Africa and then east, he could sail WEST and find a quicker route to China and the "spice islands". Please… remember that in the mid-1400s, spices were worth much MORE than their weight in gold; a successful voyage to China and back, returning with a hold full of spices, could make a captain's fortune. Columbus therefore sailed WEST, into the stormy Atlantic Ocean, looking for his fortune. He didn't find what he was looking for. There's an old joke, which is perfectly true; Columbus left Spain, not knowing where he was going. When he got back, he didn't know where he'd been. And he did it all on borrowed money.
