From 1946-1961, this day was celebrated as the Philippine Independence day based on the U.S. granting independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946. In 1961, President Diosdado Macapagal changed Philippine Independence Day to June 12 based on the proclamation of independence by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo on June 12, 1898. July 4th became the Phil-American Friendship day.
