Gatsby gained money more than once and lost it once too.

He first inherited his money from his family.

"I am the son of some wealthy people" -Chapter 4

"My family all died and I came into a good deal of money" -Chapter 4

However he lost it in the panic of the war

"I lost most of it in the big panic-the panic of the war" -Chapter 5

He then inherited money from his best friend, Dan Cody, who was murdered by his own wife for money.

"And it was from Cody that he inherited money- a legacy of twenty five thousand dollars" -Chapter 6

Lastly he earned it from, illegally (In the 1920s) selling alcohol, working in the drug business and then in the oil business

" 'I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business' " -Chapter 5
