With the possible excention of Peter, we do not know where any of the disciples went after Jesus died, although many imaginative traditions grew up around their subsequent travels and hardships. Because the Book of Revelation is signed by a 'John', writing on the island of Patmos, it came to be regarded as a work of John the disciple, who must therefore have travelled to Patmos. However, most modern scholars regard John of Patmos as an otherwise unknown person, not the disciple. Thus the traditions regarding John's travels, including the journey to Patmos, remain unsupported legends.

All Apostles, except Paul of the Gentiles, were to go to the lost tribes of Israel.

Matthew 10:5-6: "These twelve Jesus sent forth, and COMMANDED them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the LOST sheep of the house of Israel."

Though not much is mentioned of John's travels, when we do see him, he is with Peter like in Acts 8:5-14,17. It would make sense that the youngest travelled with the chief minister of the Apostles to learn. We find him with Peter, James, and Paul in Jerusalem for their meeting circa 51 AD. Tradition has him living in Asia Minor (Ephesus) after Peter's death and before his banishment to the Isle of Patmos.
