Junipero worked for a number of years in Spain after which he transferred to Mexico and spent some time teaching and evangelizing. Next he undertook a mission to unexplored California in the present United States. Here he established a number of missions that turned into settlements and, eventually, major cities. A few examples: San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco
