NATO protected many countries in Europe from the spread of communism. The nations supported re-militarization in Western Germany and later accepted West Germany, referred to at the time as The Federal Republic of Germany into the organization. They also formed a military state of relaxation between Europe and the communist countries such as Russia and Albania. This act allowed Europe to begin trading across the Atlantic and fund its military, which in-turn helped defeat the Soviet Union. (Hope This Helps)

NATO existed to defend the interests of the capitalist class in the west against the capitalist rulers of the USSR. It had no connection to Communism ( a society with no classes or rulers or money).
