The Sony PlayStation entertainment system originates from the Play Station project developed by Sony in 1988 for Nintendo. Nintendo originally approached Sony in 1986 to develop a CD-ROM drive for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), as the cartridges used in the existing NES and SNES had inadequate storage capacities. By mid-1991, Sony had produced a prototype drive that could be brought to market. However, the night before the unveiling at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Nintendo terminated the contract with Sony, and Sony was left with a device they had spent millions of dollars developing that could no longer be sold as there was no way Nintendo would license its games to another company. Thus, Sony President Norio Ohga requested that Ken Kutaragi, who had led the team that made the Play Station, to turn the drive into a complete game console. After years of development, and the creation of a spinoff subsidiary known as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Kutaragi had made the PlayStation, a CD-based video game console. It was then released in Japan in December of 1994.
