Prince Phillip only lived in Greece for about a year after his birth before the family was forced to flee. For many years afterward he lived in France near his Uncle who was married to a Bonapart. His sisters were all significantly older than him and married while he was a teenager. One of his brothers in law paid for him to go to school in Germany.

However WWII started about the same time, and Phillip followed one of the school teachers to Scotland were he founded the school Phillip (and later his sons) went to. After that he was in the Navy, and for a while after his marriage to Queen Elizabeth they lived in Malta.

When he lived in France they settled in St Cloud a suburb of Paris in a house lent to them by his Aunt Princess George of Greece. She was Princess Marie Bonaparte a French author and psychoanalyst, who contributed to Freud escape from Nazi Germany, she was the great grand niece of Emperor Napoleon 1 of France

He was first educated in an American school run by Donald MacJannet in Paris, then in 1928 he was sent to England to be educated at Cheam School a preparatory school in Hadley Hampshire, he lived with his grandmother in Kensington Palace and his Uncle George Mountbatten Marquess of Milford Haven at Lyndon Manor, in 1933 he was sent to Schule Schloss Salem in Germany that was owned by the family of his brother in law -Berhold Margrave of Baden had the advantage of saving school fees, Salem's founder was Jewish Kurt Hahn who with the rise of Nazis, fled persecution and founded Gordonstoun in Scotland after 2 terms at Salem Prince Phillip moved there, When he was 17 his uncle and guardian died of bone cancer, when he left Gordonstoun he joined the Navy. Served during WWII. Promoted to lieutenant at 21 in 1942, one of the youngest first lieutenants In the RN Returned to Britain in 1946 and was posted as an instructor at HMAS Royal Arthur, petty officer training school in Wiltshire
