Rosa Parks was unable to attend college. In 1934 women and blacks were not enrolled in colleges in the south and it isn't until the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's that the first black man will be enrolled in a southern college in Alabama. She graduated from high school and became a housekeeper.
She was home schooled until she was 11. Then she was enrolled at the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls.
Parks recalled going to elementary school in Pine Level (Alabama) where school buses took white students to their new school and black students had to walk to theirs: "I'd see the bus pass every day. But to me, that was a way of life; we had no choice but to accept what was the custom. The bus was among the first ways I realized there was a black world and a white world."
Rosa Parks never had the chance to attend college. When she graduated high school in 1934 women and blacks were not allowed to enroll into southern colleges. It wasn't until 1954 that school desegregation began and in the 1960's when the first black man was enrolled in a Alabama college. As late as 1970 only 1 out of 50 students were black and enrolled in non black colleges in the south. So, she never had a chance to go to college and became a housekeeper.
