Sam Houston only gained a very basic formal education. Around the age of 13, he attended a local school for six months while on the frontier of Virginia. After moving, he attended another small school in Maryville, Tennessee. It is said that he especially loved The Iliad. He ran away from home to join the Cherokees by the age of 16. He later joined the military, where he was severely wounded. During the several months it took him to recover, he read law books. Based on his self-education of legal issues, he opened his own law office, which was the start of his political career.
