The March to the Sea ended at Savannah.
After a rest, it resumed into South Carolina, where much the same kind of punitive raids were carried out, as this was the state that had started the war.
When they entered North Carolina, Sherman told them to ease up on the destruction, as that state had joined the Confederacy only reluctantly, and the troops just concentrated on trying to get to Virginia, to help Grant at Petersburg.
The talented Joe Johnston succeeded in stopping them, and fought a few actions after Lee's surrender, but before the Confederacy finally collapsed.
Sherman's March Through Georgia began in Atlanta and ended in Savannah. He then marched his army north. He stopped marching at Raleigh, North Carolina. There Joseph E. Johnson surrendered all armies under his command, and the Civil War east of the Mississippi River was over.
It started in Chattanooga and ended in Urbana Illinois.
The March to the Sea (Georgia) ended in December 1864. It resumed early in February 1865 when he crossed into South Carolina.
