Popular culture and taxonomic systems are the sources from which crabgrass gets its name. There is no consensus as to why the common name exists although some suggest that it acknowledges marine grass origins in salt marshes (frequented by crabs) or resemblances between legs sprawling from a crab's body like tendrils from a crown. The scientific name recognizes a finger-like comparison since the genus name Digitaria comes from the Latin digitus for "finger."
It comes from the nature of crabgrass and is taken from the characteristics of the crab. It means ill formed, crabby, obstinate and ill tempered.
Crabgrass belongs to the genus Digitaria. There are over 300 species of grass in this genus many of which are commonly called crabgrass.

In St. Augustine grass it is most important to apply a crabgrass preventer and fertilizer in early Spring. Far easier to prevent than to kill later as almost anything that kills crabgrass can kill St. Augustine grass. Our Ace Hardware sells a crabgrass preventer in the Spring. They now have a product called Garden Weasel Crabgrass killer. A container of this powder will do up to 200 sq. ft. Must be applied to wet leaves on the crabgrass. I found I did a second application on some "tough guys" but it worked fine.
