Croissants came from France in the mid 1800's as a honor for a visit from the head of the Turkish empire. If you look at it is shaped as a crescent moon, the shape from the Turkish flag.

Exact dates are not known but the croissant, in it's present form, goes back to the mid 1800's. It's predecessor, an Austrian pastry called the Kipferl, dates back to the 1200's.
