The overland Silk Road was long, dangerous, and expensive. If an all water route could be found ships could be loaded with the goods that Europe wanted and it would take less time. The man or country who found a water route would be wealthy.
He wanted to find a really fast and easy trade route to the Indies, or Asia. The Indies had a bunch of spices, which Europeans did not have.
Strangely enough, they didn't. They didn't know it existed. What they wanted was a shorter route to China, Japan and the Spice Islands.
