Initially he was working alone. But once his ideas became known his cause was taken up by Thomas Thomson, who had a large influence in getting him to produce his book, and in extending the atomic theory and arguing for Dalton's atomic theory.

∙ 11y agoWhen John Dalton was just 12 years old he started teaching in a Quaker school in his village in Cumberland. When he was 14, he spent a year working as a farmhand, but decided to return to teaching this time as a helper at a Quaker boarding school in Kendal. Within four years, the shy young man was made principal of the school. He stayed there until 1793, at which time he became a math and values tutor at the New College in Manchester.
