There are several animal species which have a sense of numbers and so that extent, the origin of mathematics predates human beings. It is almost certain that early humanoids used arithmetic. For example, has my tribe got more fighters than the one next door? If so, we can attack them and, if not, we need plan B. How hard, and at what angle should I throw this stone or spear or other weapon so at to hit that enemy or prey? The answers may not be worked out using Newton's laws of motion, but that does not mean there were no mathematical concepts involved.
