Most of the fighting in the Civil War took place in the South because the Union army was larger and better supplied.
After the Battle of Gettysburg again defeated Southern plans to attack Washington, it became a war of defense for the South and a war of offense for the North. Overly cautious Union generals were replaced by tacticians such as Grant and Sherman. The South could not out-maneuver the Northern armies and was eventually defeated as their resources and manpower dwindled.
