Where did people think Mark got his information for his gospel?

A:The Bible does not say how or where Mark got his information ofr the Gospel that bears his name, in fact the Bible does not even attribute this gospel to Mark, the companion of the Apostle Paul. It was not until around 130 CE that Papias, bishop of Hieropolis named Mark as the author of the gospel and the 'interpreter' of Peter, presumably as if Mark had written from Peter's memory and notes as his secretary. However, Papias could claim no scriptural support for his attribution to Mark nor for his claim that Mark learnt from Peter.

According to Eusebius, writing in the fourth century, Papias, a Church Father of the early second century, believed that Mark really was the author of the gospel that now bears his name and that he received his information from the apostle Peter.

Scholars now accept that Mark was unlikely to have been the author of the Gospel,which was written anonymously and remained anonymous until Papias chose to credit it to Mark. Some scholars see parallels to certain passages in Paul's epistles, which were written somewhat earlier, and suggest that the author of Mark was inspired by the epistles. John Dominic Crossan (The Birth of Christianity) believes that some of the sayings found in Mark's Gospel may have come from a 'Common Sayings Tradition', a Greek document that Crossan believes was also the inspiration for the hypothetical 'Q' document and the Gospel of Thomas. Dennis R. MacDonald (The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark) believes that some of the material in Mark's Gospel was inspired by the Greek classics.
