When the First Folio of Shakespeare's plays was printed in 1623, the plays were divided into three categories: Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies. The First Folio was crucial in preserving many of Shakespeare's works that might have otherwise been lost.
When the first Complete Shakespeare edition (called the First Folio) was published, it was called "William Shakespeare's Histories, Tragedies and Comedies" and all the plays were put into one of those three categories.
