The practice was as old as time. Slaves were in Egypt and later in Rome. Slaves were kept when one clan captured a rival clan and killed most of the rivals, keeping a few around to work for them. American Indians kept captured members of rival tribes as slaves, often as slave wives to important members of the tribe. It was a barbaric practice and should never have been brought to here by the Europeans as an attempt to run the plantations. But it was certainly not a practice that was started here. Slavery was also active in Europe while it was going on here, but Europeans did away with the practice about the same time the Northern states were abolishing the practice. Only the Southern states refused to give it up, believing that it was the only way to run the plantations.
Egypt.............The Bible speaks of slaves Slavery existed before recorded history.
Slavery goes back almost as far as human history, before written history. All ancient civilizations had some form of slavery. It most likely began when one group of cave dwellers overcame another group and enslaved the defeated members who remained. Slavery is still practiced all over the world today, where ever there are people willing to sell or buy. Today it's called human trafficking.
