For every slave their experiences were completely different from others on the plantations. Some were much worse than others, it all depends on how your owners treat you. The slaves lived in slave barracks, some had shackles in them to keeps the slaves from running away but if you were lucky then you would just be given a room and a bed. Most of the time the beds were just made and straw and very uncomfortable. Almost every slave had been beaten, and when the ones that worked in the fields were beaten the owners would simply throw salt on the wounds to help from spreading a disease and then immediately the slaves were sent back to work. If you tried to run away you would most likely be caught, and if you were caught there was severe punishments. The most common one was getting your toes cut off, not so much that you could walk but just enough to get the point across. So overall the plantation life for a slave was terrible and they were treated awful.

The slaves had hard work to do, they had to get up at 4am to bring crops in from the plantations and they only had a 15 minute break. If they were late for work they would have been whipped. They worked very long hours, even the young children had to work long hours as well. The women what are pregnant had to work in till the baby is born. If the slaves didn't work hard enough they would be whipped by the overseer. At the end of the day, the slaves still had to do chores for the slave owner. They also had to prepare there own evening meals. Sometimes they were given pots and pans for cooking, but more often they had to make their own. They followed this routine everyday, apart from Sundays. The slaves also got kept in chains and locked in a shed until they could speak English. The life of a slave would have been awful.
