The Abenaki people were really a group of small tribes living in the valleys of the Penobscot, Kennebec, Androscoggin and Saco rivers in the area that became Maine. Their name Abenaki (note the spelling) is from wôban or ôban (meaning "dawn" or "east") and aki (meaning "land") - so: the eastern land.
