Cheyenne winter camps would be located along a water course (river or creek) in a sheltered valley with plenty of standing timber. The famous attack on the Cheyenne winter camp along the Washita river in November 1868 illustrates the typical camp location. The problem with this was that food would be very difficult to find for both people and horses; dried meat would be the main daily food and hunters would have to venture very far from camp to find deer or buffalo.
