Are you referring to the Winnepeg Grenadier Regiment of Canada? Their badge was a flaming grenade very, very similar to the British Grenadier Guards cap badge. The only difference is a slight variation in the flames.

The grenadier/obergrenadier was the lowest rank in the German army. These were usually volunteer foot soldiers chosen for their strength. They would often lead the charge in battle or be asked to protect a structure that was under attack.
