Tuxta Gutierrez, capital of the Mexican state of Chiapas was founded on a place known by the natives as Tochtlan, meaning "place of rabbits" in Nahuatl or ancient Aztec. On 1520 some missionaries founded on such place a village known as San Marcos Evangelista Tuchtla. Spanish settlers changed the name to Tuxtla as it sounded more akin to castillian Spanish.

By 1748 the village was known in official documents as San Marcos Tuxtla, and in 1848 the place was finally renamed to Tuxta Gutierrez, to honor Joaquin Miguel Gutierrez (1796-1838), the person responsible for the admission of the state of Chiapas into the Mexican Federation.
