Where did Hitler get his idea for concentration camps?

There were a few precedents for Nazi concentration camps. The first concentration camps were used by the British in the Boer War, to collect troublesome people in South Africa. And the first great genocide of the 20th century was a mass murder of Armenians committed by Turkey during WW I. Both of these were undoubtedly inspirational to Nazi Germany. The idea of murdering Jews in particular had been popular in Europe for a long time. Everything done by Hitler had already been proposed in detail in the writings of Martin Luther, for example. And mass violence directed against Jews goes back at least as far as the first Crusade in the year 1000.

Actually, what we now call concentration camps were formerly called prison or (more commonly) forced labor camps. As such, they have been used throughout human civilization's history, and are hardly a Nazi invention.

The Nazi death camps (Auschwitz-Birkenau, et al) are, however, unique, in that the idea of a camp to immediately kill via industrial means all victims sent there was thought up by the Nazis.

They noticed an area of land close to Auschwitz that could be used to expand the camp. The expansion would hold Jews, but they also needed Jews to build the camp.

Most camps were formed from old Barracks. Only difference was the adding of Electric Fences, Shooting ranges and/or gas chambers. Also the transfer of the head Offices.
