Moroni was originally a man found in the Book of Mormon. There are two mentioned there. One who is a military captain, and another who is the son of Mormon (the man who compiled the Book of Mormon). Angel Moroni is Moroni, son of Mormon. This Moroni is the last prophet of the Book of Mormon, who lived in about 421 a.d.
As the last rememaining prophet before all the world went apostate (the Christians in the Old World had already fallen away by this time), it was his duty to restore what was lost to these latter days. He did so by returning to the earth as an angel, teaching Joseph Smith and giving him the Book of Mormon. A statue of the Angel Moroni is found on the majority of the Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as he has become a symbol of the restoration of ancient truths.

∙ 8y agoThere are two men named Moroni in the Book of Mormon - both are from earth, as the Book of Mormon does not discuss or even mention any other planets.
The Angel Moroni, who is noted for giving the Book of Mormon record to Joseph Smith and is depicted on the spire of most Mormon temples, is one of these Book of Mormon men who has been charged with overseeing the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the present dispensation. Mormon doctrine states that angels are those who have lived or will live on this planet (Doctrine & Covenants 130:5 states "There are no angels who minister to this earth but those who do belong or have belonged to it.") But where, as an angel, does Moroni reside? This same chapter tells us "[Angels] reside in the presence of God, on a globe like a sea of glass and fire" (D&C 130:7)
